Federal Budget Oct 6, 2020 – Migration Program 2020-21 Update
The Morrison Government is ensuring that Australia remains a safer and more united nation as part of our Economic Recovery Plan. The safety and security of Australians is the Morrison Government’s number one priority. As Australia faces the single greatest challenge in more than a generation, the 2020-21 Budget focuses on securing our borders and providing the resources to confront the pandemic and protect Australians. The budget includes an update to the migration program, an important part of Australia’s economic recovery. The migration program 2020-21 is designed to create jobs and bring high-value investment to help Australia rebound from COVID-19. The migration program 2020-21 updates are:
Overall Planning Levels:
- The migration planning level will be maintained at 160,000.
- In the skilled stream, the Employer-Sponsored, Global Talent & Business Investment and Innovation visas will be given priority.
- Family-stream places in the migration program will see an increase from 47,732 to 77,300 for this year. The GTI program has been allocated 15000 places while the BIIP program has been allocated13500 places. There will be 13750 places allocated for the Humanitarian Program.
Partner visa changes:
- English language checks would be implemented for visa applicants and their sponsors.
- Character checks and sharing of personal information will be a requirement as part of the sponsorship application.
- Priority would be given to onshore applicants with sponsors in the designated regional areas.
Covid-19 related refunds:
- Prospective marriage, Pacific Labour Scheme, and Seasonal Workers can access a VAC application refund.
- WHV and visitors can have the VAC for a subsequent visa waived, once travel resumes.
Business and Investment Visas:
- Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP) to be streamlined from 1 July 2021.
- Visa charges for this stream will also be increased by 11.3 percent this year.
