Employer Sponsored Visas

Employer sponsored visas allow employers to sponsor overseas workers on a temporary or permanent basis to fill skills shortages.

Additionally, there are a range of temporary activity visas that enable employers to hire people for activities such as sports training programs, seasonal work, etc.

What are the main requirements to sponsor a worker on an Employer Sponsored Visa?

  • The employer needs to demonstrate that they are unable to find a suitable person in Australia to fill the role through labour market testing.
  • For most employer sponsored visas the occupation must be listed on the relevant Skilled Occupations List. An employer may be able to negotiate a Labour Agreement for certain occupations that are not on the Skilled Occupations List. For highly skilled roles that are not listed on the Skilled Occupations List, employers may be able to sponsor workers through the Global Talent Scheme.
  • The employer must meet certain eligibility criteria to apply for sponsorship.
  • The employer must nominate the worker for a particular position.
  • The employee must have the skills, qualifications, and experience for the nominated occupation.
  • The visa application has to be lodged.
