Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) Visa (Subclass 400)

The 400 Visa is a temporary work visa, which will allow you to stay in Australia for up to 3 months (or 6 months in limited circumstances). This visa allows you to perform short-term, highly-specialised work that is non-ongoing. Non-ongoing work means work that is likely to be completed within 6 months or less, and you do not need to stay in Australia after this time for any reason related to that work.

What are the requirements for the 400 Visa?

  • You must be invited by an Australian business.
  • You are planning to perform non-ongoing work in an Australian business that requires your highly-specialised skills, experience or knowledge that can’t reasonably be found in the Australian labour market.
  • You must be able to support yourself and any dependent family members while in Australia.
  • You meet health and character requirements.
  • You must be a genuine visitor who only intends to stay temporarily in Australia and do the allowed activities.
  • Your previous immigration history may be considered when the DHA makes a decision on your application.
  • You cannot apply for this visa if you intend to perform as an entertainer in Australia or intend to direct, produce or take part in a production that will be shown/broadcast/performed in Australia. Consider the Temporary Activity Visa (Subclass 408) – Entertainment  if you want to do these activities.

How long does the Temporary Work Visa (400 Visa) process take?

Once the 400 visa application is lodged it takes between 10-20 days for the Department of Home Affairs to process the application. For current visa processing times please refer to the information on the Department of Home Affairs website.

What are the costs associated with applying for the Temporary Work Visa (400 visa)?

We have outlined the applicable fees that are likely to be incurred for the 400 Visa in Australian Dollars. Fees can increase without notice, so the actual fees can vary at the time of application.

  • Department of Home Affairs (DHA) Visa Application fees – $430 (for primary applicant), $430 (for each secondary applicant over 18), $110 (for each secondary applicant under 18)

What are the benefits of the Temporary Work Visa?

The visa is generally valid for up to three months, but it can be valid for up to six months in certain circumstances. The 400 visa allows you to:

  • do short-term, highly specialised, non-ongoing work for which you were granted the visa.
  • in limited circumstances, participate in an activity or work relating to Australia’s interests.
  • bring members of your family with you to Australia, if they meet the requirements. Your family members will not be allowed to work or study in Australia, except to do a language training program.
